BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS: Will G.I. Joe Retaliation Take the Top Spot?

felipe-11

@moviegeek Yes, terrible year so far. Gangster Squad, Broken City, Side Effects, Dead Man Down which were the only ones I had any faith in were all disappointing. Everything else has been just plain awful.

Luckily I think we're getting out of it this month; Spring Breakers was great, G.I. Joe was good, Evil Dead is looking great, Oblivion...

@incmob I don't know what they did during the delay, but I'm sure there were no re-shoots with Tatum. I'm pretty positive it was just the 3D conversion and some more effects to go with the 3D. Also, that city destruction scene looks pretty last moment (it looks good visually, but in terms of plot it just looks tacked on).

Evil Dead 2 Remake and Army of Darkness 2 Will Lead to Evil Dead 7!

Mar 30, 2013 by B. Alan Orange
Evil Dead 7 will be a crossover between Army of Darkness 2 and the new remake Evil Dead 7 will be a crossover between Army of Darkness 2 and the new remakeEvil Dead was in full force at WonderCon 2013 this afternoon, with director Fede Alvarez joining stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci and executive producer (original star) Bruce Campbell on stage for a look at some very gory footage from the film.

During the Q&A presentation, Fede Alvarez once again confirmed that Evil Dead 2 is moving forward fast, news he announced at this year's SXSW festival, where Evil Dead was met with copious amounts of praise. He didn't reveal any new details, but he did say he has 'big plans' for this franchise. He then dropped a bombshell: Evil Dead 2 and the recently announced Army of Darkness 2 will eventually crossover for the ultimate cult horror movie Evil Dead 7.

At this time, Sam Raimi and his brother Ivan Raimi are working on the screenplay for Army of Darkness 2, which will continue the story of Ash as seen in the original The Evil Dead from 1981. While Fede Alvarez might have been joking, he seemed serious when he said he plans to join both his new franchise together with Sam Raimi's old franchise.

Will this ever happen? Maybe. But it will be a long way off.

Evil Dead comes to theaters April 5th, 2013 and stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore. The film is directed by Fede Alvarez.

Hugh Jackman Talks Jean Grey in The Wolverine Trailer

Mar 28, 2013 by B. Alan Orange
The biggest shocker to come out of The Wolverine trailer released yesterday in both a domestic (Click Here!) and a longer international version (Click Here!) was the reveal of Famke Janssen's return as Jean Grey. While some think its too much of a spoiler this early out, Hugh Jackman sat with MTV to discuss this important moment in the film. "There's no doubt that the most important relationship in his life is, we've seen through the movies...Is his relationship with Jean Grey. Yes, we saw her die at the end of X-Men: The Last Stand, but in this movie, she has a presence, which I think is vital to the movie, particularly for him confronting the most difficult thing within himself.

The movie takes place, for those following the X-Men saga, after X-Men: The Last Stand. At the beginning of our movie, we catch [Logan] post Jean Grey, post Professor X, post all of these disasters that have happened, and he wants none of it anymore. He realizes that he is part of the problem. Somehow, when he gets involved, things don't go as planned and bad things happen. So, he is away from it. He has divorced himself from the world. He is like a hermit, and he is trying to get rid of the whole idea of Wolverine and everything he has represented. And just be Logan, whatever that means.'

The actor continued, offering more in-depth details about the dying Japanese man that Logan confronts at the beginning of the trailer.

"Wolverine has known this man for sixty years, so he was involved with him, you see that in the trailer, in World War 2 and he saved his live there. Now, sixty years later, he is in a way the King of Japan in a business sense. He's a leader, and not well at the beginning of that movie. He wants to make good on the past and reconnect with the man that saved his life sixty years ago."

Svetlana Khodchenkova (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) plays one of the main villains in the film, Viper. Hugh Jackman gave some insight into this character.

"Viper? Badass! For someone who plays Wolverine, she is pretty badass. She's not your girl next door. You're going to end up kind of loving every minute she has on screen. There are so many actors in this film that people aren't going to know. Which is exciting. It's tempting to fill parts with people we know. Yet, what I think is great about the story is, you have Wolverine going into a world that he knows nothing about. I think the audience is going to feel the same way. You are not going to know who is who or what they represent. Are they good or bad? Trust me, you are not going to know until the last frame of the movie."

One of the many complaints about the trailer has been the CGI bullet train sequence. Hugh Jackman also commented on this moment in the film.

"It is insane. It was insane to shoot it. It was, again, one of those brilliant ideas. One of the most emblematic things about Japan is the bullet train. I can't go on the bullet train without any incident. It was hairy, shooting that stuff. To re-create what that is like, the kind of winds at 300 miles per hour, let me just say, looking back at some of the footage, I thought, 'It's time for a facelift.' "

Finally, the actor spoke about not only his passion for this particular one-off adventure, but also the fans, saying he's wanted to tell this story since the debut of the original X-Men in 2000.

"It's dear to their hearts. It's one of the most intriguing, interesting, and actually one of the most dominant parts of the comic book lore, Wolverine in Japan or the Japanese Saga or the Samurai Saga, it's been called. I think it is, from the very first X-Men movie I did in 1999, I saw this comic book and I remember saying to Lauren Shuler Donner, our producer, 'This is a great movie.'"

The Wolverine comes to theaters July 26th, 2013 and stars Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen, Will Yun Lee, Brian Tee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima. The film is directed by James Mangold.

Clint Eastwood to Direct Jersey Boys Next

Mar 29, 2013 by Brian Gallagher
Clint Eastwood may direct the musical adaptation Jersey Boys Clint Eastwood may direct the musical adaptation Jersey BoysClint Eastwood has reportedly entered into early talks to direct the Jersey Boys remake for GK Films, a project which Jon Favreau was once attached to direct. It isn't known why Jon Favreau left the project.

Jersey Boys was picked up by Warner Bros. last year, but, just two months after picking it up, they put the project into turnaround in November. GK Films was in talks with both Fox and Paramount, but now that Clint Eastwood may sign on, the musical may be heading back to the director's home studio of Warner Bros. after all.

The director is moving on to this project because casting issues have delayed his proposed remake of A Star Is Born, which is also set up at Warner Bros. Esperanza Spalding is currently the top choice for the female lead, although they cannot seem to find a male lead, with several notable stars passing, including, most recently, Sean Penn. If Clint Eastwood does sign a deal for Jersey Boys, he will make that project next, with A Star Is Born following directly after.

Jersey Boys is based on the popular Broadway musical that chronicles the life of singer Frankie Valli and his group The Four Seasons. John Logan (Hugo) wrote the screenplay, based on the 2005 musical that took home four Tony Awards including Best Musical.

Jersey Boys comes to theaters in 2014.

Gangs of New York TV Series Coming from Martin Scorsese and Miramax

Martin Scorsese teams with Miramax for Gangs of New York TV Series Martin Scorsese teams with Miramax for Gangs of New York TV SeriesGlobal film and television studio Miramax and Academy Award®-winning director Martin Scorsese announced today that they are developing a television series based on the film Gangs of New York. The original film released in 2002 by Miramax and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz and Daniel Day-Lewis focused on early confrontations between rival gangs in New York in the mid to late 1800's. The series will draw from the multitude of events surrounding organized gangs at the turn of the century and shortly thereafter in America, not only in New York, but in other cities such as Chicago and New Orleans and the birth of organized crime in America.

Here is what director Martin Scorsese has to say about the project.

"This time and era of America's history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two hour film. A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life. I am excited to partner with Miramax in telling these stories."

Miramax chairman Richard Nanula said:

"No one better exemplifies what the new Miramax is and will be better than Martin Scorsese. His dedication to quality and the art of storytelling continues to excite everyone that works with him and watches his films and television programs. We could not think of a better partner for this project than the creator of the wonderful film on which it is based."

Graham King is also involved in the project.

Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said? Biopic Coming from Producer Forest Whitaker

Mar 28, 2013 by Brian Gallagher
Forest Whitaker to produce Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said? biopic Forest Whitaker to produce Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said? biopicForest Whitaker has signed on to produce Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?, a biopic centering on the life of late comedian Richard Pryor. The actor will produce alongside the comedian's widow, Jennifer Pryor and his Significant Productions partner Nina Yang Bongiovi.

The actor-producer will oversee the development of a new screenplay, although it isn't known if a writer has been attached yet. Forest Whitaker recently produced the indie hit Fruitvale, which won the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Bill Condon was previously attached to direct Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?, which had Marlon Wayans poised to play the comedy legend. The project fell apart when Bill Condon signed on to direct The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2. Since Forest Whitaker is developing a whole new screenplay, it seems unlikely they will keep that previous title. No production schedule was given.

Richard Pryor overcame an unconventional childhood, being raised in a brothel, to become a legend with his edgy brand of stand-up comedy that captivated the nation. He also co-wrote the screenplay for the 1974 comedy classic Blazing Saddles and starred in a string of 1980s comedy hits such as Stir Crazy, The Toy, Brewster's Millions, and many more.

Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said? is in development .

This film charts his journey from L.A. to Jamaica, where he makes his first all reggae album and shares stories about his time coming up through Death Row Records in the 1990s. This fascinating journey lead to the musician changing his name to Snoop Lion, and gives fans a rare behind-the-scenes look at his life in and out of the recording studio. I recently had the chance to speak with Snoop Lion over the phone about the documentary, and his reggae album, also entitled Reincarnated, which will be released on April 23. Here's what he had to say.

I remember last year when it was first announced that you were going to be called Snoop Lion, and it was really cool to see the inception of that in this film. Can you talk about what your thoughts were, when (reggae legend) Bunny Wailer first called you that in the film?

Snoop Lion: Well, actually, I was hearing it all while I was in Jamaica. The way we cut the movie up, it looked like Bunny was the first one to say it, but, in actuality, it was being said all through my visit to Jamaica. It was, 'Lion! Snoop Lion!' It was just a natural way of conversation in the Jamaican lingo. They address you by Lion, not Dogg.

How long would you say that trip to Jamaica was in the works, before you actually went? Was that something you were thinking about for a long time, to just take a month or two off and head down there?

Snoop Lion: I think it was probably three months before the date we actually went out there, that it all happened in my head. I wanted to make it work, and put it in my schedule and get in contact with some producers and people who could set it up. Once I got the musical side together, OK, we want to film it. Who's going to film it? Once we got that together, we all flew out there together, and we took it one day at a time.

I loved that scene on the rooftop in Jamaica. The first thing that came to my head was the video for "What's My Name?," and then they actually cut to that video. It was really cool. That was the exact same thing I was thinking about. Was that going through your head in the moment, 20 years later, seeing these people in that same kind of gathering?

Snoop Lion: You know what, it didn't. It didn't when I was doing it, but after we got the footage back, (director) Andy (Capper) looked at it and said, 'This is contrasting what you did 20 years ago.' I said, 'For real?' So many magical situations just happened. One thing about magic, when it happens, you've just got to sit back and let it do what it do.

At the ceremony, when they named you "Berhane" ("The Light"), that looked like just an incredible moment that was very special to you. Was that really the culmination of that entire journey, that little ceremony?

Snoop Lion: Yeah, that ceremony was deep, because it was one of my last days there. To be able to be blessed with the spirit and the whole engulfment of rastafari. A lot of it was them giving me history, so I could understand what it was. When they lady put her hands on me, and said the prodigal son has returned, she's speaking biblical, and it really connected me with the spirit and where I need to be at.

They played the whole album for us, and I really, really enjoyed it. It was such a cool blend of reggae and dance music with some amazing beats. Through your time there, and working with the producers and the studios, were there certain techniques that you will always take with you from that experience, as you move forward?

Snoop Lion: Yeah, definitely, the technique of just being able to fine-tune a song. A lot of the songs, when we went in there, they weren't right at the beginning. Something was was wrong with it, and just having the ability to fine tune it and make it fit the way you want it to fit, those were some of the traits and characteristics I took from this experience. You always learn something new every time you're in the studio, and those were a few of the things I learned.

I really enjoyed the song with your daughter Cori B., "No Guns Allowed," which I saw you perform on Conan as well. That must have been a special moment, to perform with your daughter.

Snoop Lion: Yeah, man. That song is so powerful, and to be able to put out a song that means so much, this is going to last 30 years from now, us speaking from the heart. A lot of kids lost their lives from negative gun violence, so we wanted to say we're against it and we want to see guns wiped out of the wrong hands.

You mentioned in the film that you wanted a song that you can play anywhere. Now that you have a couple of those songs, with that song and "Ashtrays and Heartbreaks," is there a place that you really want to bring this new music to, that you haven't been able to experience before?

Snoop Lion: I want to perform at the White House.

That would be amazing.

Snoop Lion: It would be, because it would be political. The music that I'm saying is so relevant to what's going on in the world. In a minute, they're going to have to let me perform, because I made it directly for them, to speak for them, to help them, to assist them, to be a citizen that cares about what's going on.

There were some really amazing stories from your past, and you coming up, your time with Death Row. Was getting to tell those stories from your past just as healing, getting that stuff out there, as the actual trip itself?

Snoop Lion: I've never really been asked about it. I never felt that nobody, professionally, asked me the questions in the right way. You ask the right question, you're going to get a great answer. A lot of those great answers that you heard in that movie was dictated by our director, Andy Capper, who asked great questions and who set me up and prepared me and got me in the mood to answer those questions. If we're doing an interview, you can get out of me whatever you want to get out of me, if you've got it right, but if you don't know what the f--k you're talking about, you're going to get a quick answer and I'm going to hang your bitch ass up.

The album comes out next month, and there have been two tracks that have been released already. Do you know what will be the next single that will drop from that?

Snoop Lion: I like a song on there called "Tired of the Running," that Akon wrote for me. I also like this new record that Diane Warren wrote for me called "The Good Shit." Either one of those two records right there, because they feel good.

Do you plan on continuing with reggae music? Was this just the first step, or do you want to keep exploring different genres of music after this album drops?

Snoop Lion: I'm going to enjoy this right now, and then when I get to a place where I know what my next move is, I'll say what it is. Right now, I'm just going to enjoy this, because it feels good. The movie feels good, the record feels good. I'm just going to give it to people and let them enjoy every moment of it, and perform it, take it around the world. If people want more, then I'll give it to them.

You also voiced a role on Turbo, the DreamWorks Animation movie that comes out this summer. That looks like a lot of fun. Is there anything you can say about your experience with that?

Snoop Lion: Yeah, Turbo is going to be a real big animated movie this year. I'm glad to have DreamWorks on my team, working with me, giving me an opportunity to be a part of a big movie like that. I also did a song for the soundtrack with my artist. We're just trying to connect the dots and keep it hot and do things that are relevant. I love using my voice for the right reasons.

Is there anything else that you're working on?

Snoop Lion: I love my football league, the Snoop U Football League (SnoopyFL.net). We've been around for nine years. That's my non-profit organization where we give back to the community. That's my pride and joy. I love that more than music, videos, awards, anything, because we're dealing with kids and helping mold and shape their lives.

What would you like to say to anyone who is curious about the album and the movie about why they should give it a chance?

Snoop Lion: Yeah, man, everybody out there who's paying attention and listening should go get the movie Reincarnated. The record will be out April 23, and also pick up the book. We've got a table book with pictures of the whole experience. Snoop Lion, direct, live, and in effect.

Excellent. That's all I have. Thanks so much. It was a pleasure talking to you.

Snoop Lion: Hey man, you have a beautiful day. Thanks for the blessings.

You can watch Snoop Lion's fascinating journey in the documentary Reincarnated, currently playing in limited release.

Reincarnated was released March 15th, 2013 and stars Theocracy Reign Ivine Order of the Nyahbinghi, Dr. Dre, Daz Dillinger, Angela Hunte, Ariel Rechtshaid, Dre Skull, Jahdan Blakkamoore, Andrew aka Moon Bain. The film is directed by Andy Capper.
